Study Techniques Cover

Are you one of those students who are obsessed with the memorisation technique? Good news for you! After reading this blog, you no longer have to overwhelm your brain with terms and concepts that does not make sense to you. Every study revision will be a breeze for you, making your life so much easier!

The SQ3R Study Technique

Research has shown that the SQ3R Study Technique is one of the best methods to help students identify and retain key information within their syllabus. For those who are new to this study technique, SQ3R is an acronym that stands for the five steps of the reading comprehensive process.

S stands for Survey – Students should glance through chapter by chapter and take notes on headings, subheadings, images or other visual elements.

Q stands for Question – Before diving in-depth into the chapter, students should formulate some questions around the chapter’s content.

The 1st R stands for Read – Look for answers to the questions that was formulated in the previous steps.

The 2nd R stands for Recite – After reading each section, do a summary of the content using your own words based on your understanding. This is the step where students recall and identify major concepts and start answering questions from the second step.

The 3rd R stands for Review – At the end of each chapter, students should review and quiz themselves based on the questions that was previously formulated. If there are any misconceptions, re-read the specific section.

Retrieval Practice

Study Technique 2

The retrieval practice is a study technique that possesses similar traits to the memorisation technique. However, instead of memorising the entire syllabus, this technique focuses on recalling the answer to a specific question.

How It Works:

  • Students will remember and write down the answers on flashcards, instead of looking at the flashcards for answers.

The Feynman Technique

Another effective study method to learning concepts quickly, The Feynman Technique help students to explain concepts in plain and simple terms. When students explain concepts in their own words, they are more likely to understand it a lot faster as compared to when someone explains it to them.

How It Works:

  • Set the stage – Students should select a concept or topic to focus on and note down everything that they know about it.
  • ELI5 – Explain in your own words, as simple as possible.
  • Assess and study – Review notes with the textbook and identify areas that are incorrect. Students should take this opportunity to figure out the correct answers.
  • Organise, convey and review – Look back at the notes and try to put any complex explanations in layman terms. At the end, students should review their understanding of the concept.

Mind Mapping

Study Technique 4

Mind mapping is a study technique which allow students to visually organise information in a diagram, by writing main ideas and keywords that connects directly to the concept. Instead of the traditional method of writing down notes, mind mapping can help to improve reading comprehension and enhance revisions.

How It Works:

  • Students will write down a topic or concept in the middle of a blank sheet of paper.
  • Connect an idea to the main topic by drawing arrows around the topic.
  • Connect sub-branches of supporting ideas to the main branch.
  • Students should attempt using different colours for each branch and use visuals if needed.

Study Before Bed

Studying before bed

Contrary to popular beliefs, studying before bed proves to be beneficial in improving memory. When students review their flashcards or notes before sleeping, it helps to improve recall. This is because, when in REM sleep mode, the brain organises one’s memories, allowing students to retain information better.

No students wish to study any more than they already did in school. However, with effective study techniques, it can ensure that they have productive study sessions, which boosts their understanding of topics and concepts.
