When students in Singapore hit Secondary 2, one of the big academic decisions they face is choosing between Triple Science and Double Science. This choice can feel overwhelming, especially with future pathways and subject strengths to consider. In this blog, we break down the key differences between the two, so you can make the best decision for your goals.
🔍 What is Triple Science?
Triple Science means taking all three pure sciences — Biology, Chemistry, and Physics — as separate subjects. As a result, students will receive individual O-Level grades for each science subject.
In this track, you will be taking:
-
Pure Biology – which focuses on the study of living organisms and life processes
-
Pure Chemistry – which dives deep into the composition, structure, and properties of matter
-
Pure Physics – which explores the principles of forces, motion, energy, and more
Altogether, this option provides a more in-depth and comprehensive science education, ideal for students who are strong in Science and considering science-related pathways in the future.
This means more content, more depth, and a heavier workload — but also stronger science fundamentals.
🔍 What is Double Science?
Double Science, also known as Combined Science, is a more streamlined option. Students choose two sciences, which are examined in a single combined subject.
You will take:
- Any two combinations (e.g., Chemistry + Physics, or Chemistry + Biology)
- The final O-Level grade will reflect your combined performance in both sciences
It covers slightly less content and is often preferred by students balancing other heavy subjects or CCA commitments.
🧭 So… Which Should You Choose?
Ask yourself these questions:
✅ Are you strong in Science and enjoy it?
✅ Are you planning to take science-related subjects in JC or Polytechnic (e.g. Medicine, Engineering, Life Sciences)?
✅ Are you able to manage a heavier academic load?
If you answered “yes” to most of these — Triple Science could be for you.
But if you are looking to keep your workload balanced, still want a solid science foundation, and are unsure of future science-related plans — Double Science is still a great choice.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to Triple Science vs Double Science in Singapore. It depends on your interests, strengths, and long-term goals. What matters most is making an informed choice that suits you.
